He's been reigning as the King of the World at the global box office for over a week; and now, director James Cameron has claimed the crown in the U.S. and his home country of Canada.According to industry tracker BoxOfficeMojo.com, Cameron's sci-fi epic "Avatar" sunk his own domestic box office record as the blockbuster film crossed the $601 million mark in ticket sales on Tuesday. "Titanic" has held the record since it ended its theatrical run in 1998, with a total of $600.8 million in ticket sales. Thanks to likely boost in revenue after earning nine Oscar nominations Tuesday, "Avatar" earned more than $3 million to bring its total to $601.1 million.Of course, dollar for dollar Cameron has quite a way to go to best "Gone with the Wind" for the all-time adjusted title. Taking inflation into account, the 1939 Clark Gable-Vivien Leigh epic's total would be $1.5 billion by today's standards.Adjusted for inflation, "Titanic" comes in at No. 6 on the list with $957 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo. "Avatar" is currently No. 20 on the all-time list, about behind the adjusted total for the Walt Disney classic "Fantasia."Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, "Avatar" has been No. 1 at the box office for seven consecutive weekends since its Dec. 18 release. With Tuesday's estimates domestically and overseas, the film to date has earned $2.04 billion at the global box office."Avatar" was nominated for nine Oscars Tuesday, including three nominations for Cameron including Best Director and Best Picture (as one of the film's producers and Best Editing.Cameron won three of "Titanic's" 11 Oscars in 1998, also for work as the film's producer, director and editor.
