Penn State (4-2) At Virginia (4-2)
GAME NOTES: The Penn State Nittany Lions and Virginia Cavaliers hook up tonight as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Lions enter the tilt on a winning note, as they captured an 87-75 victory over Sacred Heart last Wednesday. The victory gives PSU its second two-game win streak of the season and the Lions now sit at 4-2 overall. Up next for PSU is a date with Temple on Saturday.
As for the Cavs, they most recently concluded their run in the Cancun Challenge with a 76-65 victory over Cleveland State on Wednesday. It marked the third win in the past four games for Virginia, which is now 4-2 overall. The Cavs are 5-4 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and that includes a perfect 4-0 mark at home.
Virginia leads the all-time series with PSU, 5-2, and that takes into account a 3-0 record at home. However, the teams are meeting for the first time since the 1984-85 campaign.
The Lions shot an unconscious 63.8 percent from the field and knocked down 6-of-13 attempts from long range, as they downed Sacred Heart last week. PSU also went an efficient 21-of-25 at the foul line, in addition to handing out 21 assists to only 11 turnovers. David Jackson dropped in 26 points to lead the charge, while Talor Battle turned in an all-around effort of 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Battle is one of the most complete players in the nation and he leads PSU in scoring (18.2 ppg), rebounding (6.3 rpg) and assists (3.5 apg) on the season. Jackson checks in with 11.2 ppg and 4.3 rpg, and Jeff Brooks rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.3 ppg.
The Cavs dominated the boards, 32-18, including a 12-2 advantage on the offensive glass, as they defeated CSU last week. The Cavs also put forth a sound shooting performance, hitting on 52.8 percent from the field and 10- of-17 from three-point distance. Sylven Landesberg tallied 20 points and five assists to lead the way, while Will Sherrill delivered 18 points and six boards off the bench. Mike Scott got involved as well, registering 15 points and eight rebounds. For the season, Landesberg paces the team in scoring at 16.2 ppg, and Scott is nearly averaging a double-double with 12.5 ppg and a team-high 9.0 rpg.
Both teams have their fair share of weapons, but go with the Cavs, as they have the luxury of hosting this game.
