Centre County Police Investigating Home Break-Ins

Thursday, September 4, 2008 – updated: 1:41 pm EDT September 4, 2008

Police in Centre County are investigating several home break-ins over the past month.

The latest happened early Wednesday at the home of Penn State students just one block from the police station. Investigators said at least two men simply walked into and unlocked apartment around 2 a.m.

One of the residents studying in his room heard noise downstairs and found the intruders in the act. The victims and the robbers exchanged words before the thieves took off with thousands of dollars worth of items, including a laptop computer and an iPhone.

The student gave police a description of the robbers, and a lieutenant leading the investigation said the incident is most likely not related to other incidents throughout the county.

State College Police Lt. Chris Fisher said people need to make better decisions.

"It's common enough that it's a good reminder for us to put the word out for people to take whatever measures they can - such as locking their doors, being vigilant, and communicating, especially if several people live in the same dwelling but maybe in different bedrooms," Fisher said.

Anyone with information regarding any of the recent break-ins is asked to call police.
