Making DTV Switch Doesn’t Have To Be Complicated

Posted: 2:36 pm EST February 8, 2008Updated: 3:56 pm EST November 6, 2008

Making the switch from analog to digital television isn’t as confusing and expensive as some make think.

Viewers can easily use their current television and still receive the digital signal, thanks to converter boxes that provide a signal when TV stations start broadcasting solely in digital next February.

A week from Sunday, Best Buy, Radio Shack and Wal-Mart will start selling the converter boxes across the country.

WJACTV’s Chief Engineer Rob Abele said the converter boxes can easily be hooked up.

He said the antenna must be connected to the back of the converter box, then a cable is run from the box to the back of the TV. The TV is then tuned to Channel 3 or 4 to receive the signal from the box.

Just like with a new TV, the viewer will run a channel scan to find all of the DTV channels in their area. After that, point the digital antenna in the direction of the analog antenna.

To be sure it’s positioned properly, viewers can check signal strength under the main menu.
