Professor Wrestling: 'No Surrender' Results
Angle Takes On Everyone
Thursday, August 30, 2007 – updated: 12:15 am EDT September 10, 2007
Listen up!Class is in session.TNA is finally ready to step into the big time. At its "No Surrender" pay-per-view Sunday night, the company announced the Spike TV "Impact" show will soon expand from one hour on Thursday nights to two hours. Nice move. As for the PPV, it featured three Kurt Angle title matches.
Angle put up the TNA championship belt, the TNA X-Division strap and the TNA tag belts (with Sting). He won all that hardware in a mega-bout against Samoa Joe in the last TNA PPV. So did Kurt keep all that gold? Or did he lose it all? Thank the good Lord you have someone to tell you what happened. That's later. But first, the undercard:Challenge Match: Robert Roode vs. Kaz
What Should Happen: It's Kaz, the former X-Division champ versus Robert Roode, the bad guy stuck in midcard-ville. Roode has potential, but he's been bogged down with dumb storylines. He should win here and gain a little momentum.
What Will Happen: I'll take Roode to win.
What Did Happen: Roode got the pin and the win.
Tag Team Gauntlet Match: Voodoo Kin Mafia vs. Latin American Exchange vs. Team 3D vs. The Motor City Machineguns vs. Triple X vs. AJ Styles and Tomko vs. Sonjay Dutt and Petey Williams vs. Raven and Havok vs. Eric Young and Shark Boy vs. Lance Hoyt and Jimmy Rave
What Should Happen: Well, this should be interesting. At the very least it's a nice way to get the roster some TV time. The winner gets a shot at the TNA tag belts in October. Who should that be? There's nothing wrong with Styles and Tomko.
What Will Happen: I'd like to pick Young and Shark Boy -- but that's the comedy team. I'm guessing Team 3D will get the ultimate win.
What Did Happen: There certainly isn't a thing wrong with Styles and Tomko. They won. Why I didn't pick them is a mystery even to me. D'oh!
Challenge Match: Rhino vs. James Storm
What Should Happen: Eh. I've seen this one before. Won't this program ever end? Flip a coin, and that's who should win. Both are talented, but mid-carders right now.
What Will Happen: My money is on Rhino to win.
What Did Happen: Rhino got the pin.
No Disqualification Match: Dustin "Black Reign" Rhodes vs. Chris Harris
What Should Happen: Dustin has a new gimmick where he paints his face and acts all spooky. And to tell you the truth, it's not too bad. Harris is pretty vanilla, but a good worker. I have faith this might actually be a good match. Rhodes has to win, though. Why give someone a new persona just to have him squashed?
What Will Happen: The son of Dusty Rhodes -- the former Goldust -- will win.
What Did Happen: Terrible match, as Harris rolled up Dustin for the win. So much for letting a new gimmick flourish.
Challenge Match: Samoa Joe vs. Christian Cage
What Should Happen: This actually might be the best match on the card. Both are top-tier players, so it doesn't really matter who wins. I just want a good match.
What Will Happen: I'm going with Samoa Joe in this one. He'll beat Cage cleanly.
What Did Happen: Christian won after Joe got disqualified.
TNA Tag Team Championship Match: Kurt Angle and Sting (c) vs. Ron Killings and Pacman Jones
What Should Happen: Jones is still under an order from the Tennessee Titans not to touch anyone in a wrestling ring. Think that'll make for a great match? This will -- and should be -- a squash for team Angle.
What Will Happen: Another opportunity for you to double your mortgage. Angle and Sting will keep their belts.
What Did Happen: Angle turned on Sting, giving him an Olympic slam. The opportunistic Pacman Jones -- who hadn't done a thing until tis point -- got the pin.
TNA X-Division Championship Match: Kurt Angle (c) vs. "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal
What Should Happen: Lethal is the guy who mimics Randy "Macho Man" Savage. Angle is the guy who should swat him away like a fly.
What Will Happen: Angle will win. Oooooh, yeah!
What Did Happen: Lethal pulled out a surprise victory over Angle. Dig it!
TNA Championship Match: Kurt Angle (c) vs. Abyss
What Should Happen: I should pick Abyss just to be cute. But that would be idiotic. He should not be champion.
What Will Happen: Angle will pull off the trifecta, retaining all of his belts.
What Did Happen: Angle salvaged one of three title matches, beating Abyss with the ankle lock.
That's it. For the night, three right and five wrong. While you might say, "That idiot could do better," I'd like to point out that TNA management likely saw this column before the show -- realized my predictions were right on, and decided to do some last-minute booking changes so it didn't look like I was writing their show. That's my story. And yes, I'm sticking to it.One other note before we go: don't forget to downloadEPISODE 44 of "Old School, New School," the Professor Wrestling podcast. This week, my co-hosts Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire go thumbs up or thumbs down on the return of Triple H to WWE. We also examine John Cena's long WWE championship run. Is it good for business? You'll have to download the show to find out! Miss it, and we may as well size you up for a dunce cap. That's it!Class is dismissed!(Professor Wrestling is a masked employee of Internet Broadcasting, hailing from Parts Unknown.
