The play follows an older married couple living in a small college town over the course of a year. The couple rent out an extra room in their large, Victorian home to a graduate student at the University of Indiana, Pennsylvania (UIP). The husband, a somewhat gruff and angry old man, is completely against the idea of a boarder, but the wife insists that the income is needed. The young student refuses to be scared away by the older man s posturing, but it is obvious that this living arrangement will be an interesting one. As time goes by, we meet the couple s daughter and their grandchildren, among other colorful characters. The play checks in at major holidays and at times of family crisis, giving us glimpses at the highs and lows of the family s year. When the daughter finally confesses she is unhappy with her husband and filing for divorce, their entire world is turned upside down, but they learn that the other surprises are awaiting them will have a much larger impact on their lives.
