  • While President Barack Obama was the winner in last night's presidential contest, he wasn't the only victor. Take a look at who 'won big' and who was defeated during Election 2012.
  • Defeated: Despite a strong campaign throughout the country, Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, (seen here with his wife Ann Romney) conceded the race to President Obama last night.
  • Winner: U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch smiles before the announcement that he won his race and retained his Senate Seat.
  • Winner: In Wisconsin, Democrat Tammy Baldwin defeated popular former Gov. Tommy Thompson to become the first openly gay U.S. senator.
  • Defeated: Although all the networks called the race for President Obama, Fox News commentator Karl Rove refused to accept the decision. Late in the night, he pleaded with Fox hosts to un-call Ohio, with the argument that future returns in the state would favor Romney.
  • Winner: In Colorado, voters passed Amendment 64 which will make it legal for individuals to possess and for businesses to sell marijuana for recreational use. Washington also voted to legalize recreational pot use beginning Dec. 6, with sales at state-licensed stores at least a year away. In Oregon, a marijuana-legalization measure was defeated.
  • Winner: Families for Better Public Schools and other backers of Georgia's charter school amendment. On Tuesday, the state’s voters said yes to Amendment One — which will change the Georgia constitution to make sure the state can approve charter schools and establish a commission to consider applications for them.
  • Winner: In Maryland and Maine voters voted to approve same-sex marriage. Minnesota voters defeated a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in the state. Similar measures were approved in 30 other states, most recently in North Carolina in May.
  • Winner: U.S. Rep. John Barrow of Georgia's 12th district, the last white Democrat in the House from the Deep South, won re-election in one of the more closely watched congressional elections in the nation.
  • Defeated: Rep. Todd Akin, who came under fire for saying women had ways of preventing pregnancies in the case of “legitimate rape,
  • Winner: State Rep. Deb Fischer, R-Lincoln, Neb., was elected to the U.S. Senate, completing a remarkable eight-year journey from a little-known state legislator.
  • Defeated: Democratic Rep. Larry Kissell (right) thanks supporter Grace Lozier, 10, at his campaign headquarters in Concord, N.C., Republican businessman Richard Hudson beat Kissell in North Carolina's 8th Congressional District.
  • Winner: Nevada Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., shares a moment with his wife, Lynne Heller after beating challenger Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., to be re-elected to the Senate.
  • Defeated: Kentucky's 6th Congressional District Rep. Ben Chandler (right) with his wife, Jennifer, speaks to a group of supporters as he concedes his race to Republican Andy Barr.
  • Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren won a hard-fought race for the Senate.
  • Victor Hill, shown at a Clayton County, Ga., candidate forum in mid-August, reclaimed the office he lost in the 2008 election but how long he will serve is uncertain because of the felony charges pending against him.
