Lower Back Pain May Not Need Surgery

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 – updated: 3:16 pm EDT April 16, 2008

Many people suffer from lower back pain. Some of you opt for surgery, but you might not need to.

The body is filled with pressure points and sometimes those points are needed to be manipulated to bring relief for your problematic area. One such area is the piriformis muscle. It is located in your butt and the tightening of it can constrict your sciatic nerve and cause you pain in the form of sciatica. It can cause lower back pain, groin pain, leg pain and even foot pain.

The Integrative Health Department at Windber Medical Center has seen an increase of people seeking their therapy out to help them elevate their pains and even avoid surgery.

The therapy can be in the form of acupressure or acupuncture. The goal of both therapies is to get blood flowing to the injured muscle and speed up the healing process. Officials with Integrated Health say they have an 80 percent success rate.

When it comes to the acupressure therapy, it is covered by most insurances under occupational therapy, however the acupuncture is usually not covered by insurance.
