Local Mom Overcomes Eating Addiction; Loses 25 Pounds In 3 Months

After years of trying to lose 100 pounds, Kara Ketley is making progress.

Thanks to Curves and the WJAC-TV's Losing It Across The Alleghenies initiative, Ketley is seeing lasting health results.

Kara says "I've dropped almost 2 clothing sizes so the biggest difference in being in the bottoms, the pants. Actually right now, I'm walking around in pants that are too big for me. They're very baggy, I need to go shopping," said Kara Ketley.

Ketley has lost about 25 pounds, more than 20 inches and 14 pounds of fat. To put that in perspective, she's lost about five large cans of Crisco in about three months.

"I have noticed a tremendous amount of change. For instance, I'm sleeping better at night, I'm able to get out of bed in the morning a little bit better, it's not such a struggle. I have a lot more energy. I actually crave working out, before I craved eating junk food, and those kinds of things, but now I actually crave those workouts to relieve stress," Ketley said.

Ketley has also cleaned up her diet. She is following the Curves weight management plant and eating five times a day. Her addiction to fast food, refined carbohydrates and soda is broken, and she's taken to eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

"This has been the best program that I've ever come across. I am very grateful. I think the eating plan is the best thing for me. Because it's doable, there's variety. And because you go through phases one, two, and three. You know I can have a piece of cake now and then, so it's not like in my mind I'll never have a piece of sugar, I'll never have a piece of bread. It's very livable. I'm satisfied and I'm doing it," Ketley said.

In the gym, Ketley is giving it all she's got. In a 30-minute routine that combines strength and cardiovascular training on hydraulic exercise equipment.

She supplements her workouts at Curves by walking several times a week at home. Now that winter is over, Ketley said she will spend even more time outdoors.
