Residents Concerned About Expansion Of Penn State Altoona
While students at Penn State Altoona are enjoying their summer vacation, folks living around the campus are also on a much need break.Residents say since the campus started expanding, more and more students are living off campus and in their neighborhoods. They say a majority of them are trying to enjoy their retirement years -- but they simply can't do that when school is in session.Penn State Altoona officials recently announced it will increase enrollment by 500.Residents have been taking their concerns to Logan Township Supervisors who've recommended that they talk to the planning and zoning department.Beverly Rahm, who's lived in her home for 42 years, said students speed up and down the roads, leave trash and throw parties that draw crowds of over 50.Logan Township Police Chief Ron Heller says his department arrested approximately 230 students during the 2008-2009 school year.Heller said the township supervisors passed a disorderly gathering ordinance last fall. The ordinance not only holds tenants responsible, but the landlords as well. The zoning and planning department will hold a meeting at Juniata Gap Elementary Tuesday at 5 p.m.
