American League Game Capsules

POSTED: 1:28 am EDT July 9, 2008

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Andy Pettitte threw eight brilliant innings, while Melky Cabrera hit his first home run at Yankee Stadium since May 4, and the New York Yankees crushed the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays, 5-0, in the opener of a two-game set at Yankee Stadium. Derek Jeter was 2-for-4 and had two RBI for the Yankees, who have won three straight and are 4-2 over their last six contests, cutting their deficit to 7 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the lead in the AL East; the Red Sox trail the Rays by three games, as Boston beat Minnesota, 6-5,on Tuesday. Pettitte (10-6) allowed just four hits and fanned five batters, putting him at 1,501 strikeouts in a Yankee uniform. B.J. Upton was 2-for-4 and had the only extra-base hit for Tampa Bay, which has dropped its last two after rattling off seven victories in a row. Scott Kazmir (7-4) took the loss as he was touched for two runs on five hits in just five innings of work.

Final Score: Boston 6, Minnesota 5

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Brandon Moss drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and finished the game with two RBI as Boston rallied to clip Minnesota, 6-5, in the middle contest of three at Fenway Park. Manny Ramirez, who drove in the lone run in Monday's win, hit a game-tying two-run homer for the Red Sox, who have taken the first two games in the series and four of six overall. Boston crept within three games of first-place Tampa in the AL East, after the Rays fell to the Yankees 5-0. David Aardsma (3-2) picked up the win by pitching two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief. Jonathan Papelbon worked out of a jam in the ninth to record his 27th save. Starter Jon Lester went 7 1/3 innings, but yielded nine hits and five runs. Brendan Harris finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Twins, who have lost two in a row after a five-game win streak. Delmon Young, Nick Punto and Denard Span drove in a run each. Matt Guerrier (4-4) took the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in one frame. That spoiled a solid outing by starter Nick Blackburn, who gave up six hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Final Score: Detroit 9, Cleveland 2

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-4 and recorded his first multi-homer game as a member of the Detroit Tigers in a 9-2 shellacking of the punchless Cleveland Indians in the first of a brief two-game series. Justin Verlander's (6-9) performance was just as impressive, as the right- hander gave up two first-inning runs but retired the final 14 hitters he faced in his seven-inning start. He fanned seven while surrendering just a walk and two hits, and has not allowed more than two runs in each of his past six outings, going 4-0 during that span. Cabrera and Marcus Thames each knocked in three, with Thames and Ivan Rodriguez recording a home run apiece to put Detroit back over the .500 mark (45-44) with back-to-back wins. Jeremy Sowers' (0-5) struggles continue for the Indians, getting lit up for seven runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. Jhonny Peralta provided Cleveland's only spark with a two-run homer, but it was hardly enough in the team's season-high ninth straight setback.

Final Score: Toronto 7, Baltimore 6

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Scott Rolen's ground ball in the bottom of the ninth went through the legs of Baltimore Orioles shortstop Freddie Bynum, allowing Alex Rios to score and cap a four-run comeback to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 7-6 victory. B.J. Ryan (2-3) picked up the win with a perfect ninth inning while Dustin McGowan went four innings, giving up four runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the start for Toronto, which won for just the second time in six games. McGowan left the game due to right shoulder soreness. Rios had a three-run triple and scored twice while Vernon Wells was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Blue Jays in the opener of the three-game series. Daniel Cabrera allowed four runs on six hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out three for the Orioles, who have lost three in a row. Jim Johnson (2-3) allowed one unearned run on two walks and no hits while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss. Nick Markakis was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Aubrey Huff homered for Baltimore.

Final Score: Texas 3, LA Angels of Anaheim 2

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Matt Harrison won in his major league debut and Josh Hamilton drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, as the Rangers edged the Angels, 3-2, in the second installment of a four-game series. Hamilton drove in two runs for Texas, which won for the third time in four games. Chris Davis homered for the Rangers, who bounced back form a 9-6 defeat on Monday. Ian Kinsler doubled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 20 games. Harrison (1-0), who was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma, allowed five hits and two runs, while logging a walk and a strikeout over seven innings. Eddie Guardado threw the eighth and C.J. Wilson worked out of trouble in the ninth for his 22nd save. Joe Saunders (12-5) was saddled with the loss despite going eight innings, surrendering six hits and three runs. He didn't walk a batter and had five strikeouts, but the All-Star didn't get enough run support. Garret Anderson had a two- run single for the Angels, who lost for just the second time in seven contests.

Final Score: Chicago 8, Kansas City 7 (13 innings)

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Orlando Cabrera went 2-for-6 and drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 13th inning, as the Chicago White Sox outlasted the Kansas City Royals, 8-7, in the opener of a three-game set. The ChiSox jumped on top in the 13th inning. Alexei Ramirez cracked a one-out single and came around as Cabrera followed with a double, giving Chicago an 8-7 cushion. Esteban German led the home half off with a single off Nick Masset. David DeJesus went down swinging for the first out, though Matt Aviles put runners on the corners with a single. Alex Gordon then worked a walk to load the bases, however, pinch-hitter Mark Grudzielanek grounded into a double play to end the game. Nick Swisher and AJ Pierzynski each had a pair of RBI for the White Sox, who have won three in a row and are 8-2 over their last 10 games. Jim Thome ended 4-for-5 with two doubles and scored three times, while Joe Crede hit a solo home run and finished with two RBI. Masset (1-0) earned the win as he threw the final two innings and gave up three hits. Jose Contreras started and went 5 2/3 innings while giving up five runs on 10 hits. DeJesus and Aviles both had two RBI for the Royals, who have dropped four of five. Jose Guillen had a triple in defeat. Kyle Davies lasted 5 2/3 innings for KC and yielded three runs on nine hits. Robinson Tejeda (0-1) absorbed the loss as he gave up a run on three hits over the final two frames.

Final Score: Oakland 2, Seattle 0

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Justin Duchscherer put on a dazzling display of pitching, throwing his first career shutout to lead the Athletics in a 2-0 win over the Mariners. Duchscherer (10-5), who inherited the ace role of Oakland's pitching staff after Rich Harden was traded to the Cubs, allowed only two hits the entire game and did not let a runner reach third base, finishing with three strikeouts while walking none and winning for the sixth time in seven starts. Tuesday marked his first career complete game. A contender to start for the American League in the upcoming All-Star game, Duchscherer, who lowered his majors-leading ERA to 1.78, has given up only six runs in his last 46 2/3 innings, encompassing six starts. Ryan Sweeney, Kurt Suzuki and Jack Hannahan each had two hits for the A's, who have won four of their last six contests. Carlos Silva (4-11) took the hard-luck defeat, losing for the ninth time in his last 10 starts. Silva went the distance as well, throwing eight innings, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none.
