We Are What Our Kids Eat

It’s bad enough that your kids can’t clean their rooms. Now, there’s a study that shows what your children eat may also be impacting your weight. “Chocolate cake, cookies. I try not to eat it, but when it's there, it’s hard to avoid,” says one mother.

Yes, it’s a fact. A government survey says that adults living with children eat almost five grams of fat a day more than kid-free households. "Of this extra five grams of fat, almost two grams were artery clogging, saturated fats," says Delia Hammock, R.D., nutritionist, Good Housekeeping Institute. "And that’s the equivalent of eating two slices of bacon every day. When these fatty foods are in the house, adults tend to eat them too. The solution: health foods and snacks for everyone.”

Good Housekeeping has a few ideas for healthy snacks. "Make personalized pizzas using healthful ingredients," Hammock recommends. "All you need is to spread some marinara sauce on pita bread. Add part-skim mozzarella cheese, turkey pepperoni. Make other ones using roasted red peppers, broccoli or roasted or broiled chicken."

And Good Housekeeping says instead of fast food burgers, make veggie burgers on a whole wheat bun with your favorite fixings. "A veggie burger and a salad is a great choice. And even if you add a slice of cheese and a small bag of chips for the kids, you’ve still really slashed the saturated fat,” says Hammock. And if you must have sweets in the house, she says find some that the kids love but are less tempting for you.

A final note: Good Housekeeping says the study about kids and parents also found that the average adult without children eats about 30 percent more fat per day than recommended. So we can’t blame it all on the kids. To learn more, check out the May issue of Good Housekeeping or visit www.goodhousekeeping.com.
