Skin Care Company Avoids Toxins, Goes Natural

Company Shares 'Five Red Flags' Of Eco-Friendly Skin Care

As the trend to be green spreads, a Connecticut company is offering a natural alternative to skin-care.

Mod Skin Labs in Granby promises its customers that all of its products are natural and toxin-free, local station WFSB reported.

Owner Raffaelle Ruberto said that many traditional products contain toxins.

"We're noticing a trend of consumers coming from traditional department stores, boutiques, salons, and seeking more natural alternatives," he said.

Ruberto said that there are five red flag ingredients that consumers should steer away from: parabens, synthetic fragrance and dyes, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate and petroleum.

While there is no scientific evidence these toxins cause harm, especially in trace amounts, Ruberto believes over a lifetime they could have a cumulative effect.

"Women consume about 700 to 800 pounds of lipstick or lip balms in a lifetime," he said.

Ruberto said switching to natural products takes the worry away.

"It's funny, we never targeted moms-to-be, but now new mothers are becoming our No. 1 consumer of Mod Skin, our No. 1 client. Because they're keen on looking for toxin-free skincare, they're worried about what they're putting in their body for their babies."

Mod Skin leaves synthetic ingredients out and uses ingredients provided by nature.

The company uses white grapes, green tea, organic wheat grass and pomegranates in its products.

"We take all these whole food sources, put them in our products, and what we're noticing is that people's skin becomes more revitalized, healthier," Roberto said. "We've returned to our roots, and we see that once we give our skin what nature has provided us, the balance returns."

The company also uses eco-friendly and minimal packaging.

Mod Skin products are available at Whole Foods stores. For more information, visit the Mod Skin Web site.
