A Penn State University graduate was among the 33 victims of the massacre at Virginia Tech.

Jeremy Michael Herbstritt was pursuing graduate work in civil engineering at Virginia Tech, according to officials at Penn State.

Herbstritt, 27, graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1998.

Herbstritt had two undergraduate degrees from Penn State, one in biochemistry and molecular biology from 2003, and another in civil engineering from 2006.

Herbstritt's father, Mike Herbstritt, works at Penn State Office of Physical Plant. Mike Herbstritt had informed a co-worker of his son's death at Virginia Tech, and the co-worker then passed the information on to Penn State administrators.

Mike Herbstritt and his wife had been in Boston on Monday to watch a daughter run in the Boston Marathon as part of a charity group, Centre Volunteers in Medicine.

Jeremy Herbstritt's younger brother is currently a freshman at Penn State.
