Two Injured In ATV Crash

Posted: 1:29 pm EST November 9, 2007Updated: 2:43 pm EST November 9, 2007

In the wake of Pennsylvania ranking highest for all-terrain vehicle crashes, two more people were injured in an ATV crash early Friday.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. near St. Francis University in Loretto. Police said two 22-year-old riders on an ATV hit a chain link fence at the intersection of Manor Driver and St. Catherine Street before rolling over.

Police said alcohol was a factor. The victims were flown to a nearby hospital, one with what officials called a "major injury."

From 2001 to 2005, Pennsylvania had more ATV crashes than any other state in the country. A spokesperson for the Consumer Product Safety Commission said crashes like Friday's were not surprising, especially since one of the state's major safety tips when riding ATVs is not to consume alcohol or drugs or carry passengers while riding.

With hunting season under way, officials said they are concerned those statistics will continue to rise if people don't take precautions while riding.

Police said the two crash victims will be charged with drunken driving and other ATV-related offenses.
