CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. -- Since the attack Thursday at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas, several WJAC viewers have been calling to say their loved ones stationed there are fine, at least physically. However, the shooting that took the lives of 13 people, has taken an emotional toll on the soldiers and their families.According to a family member of Master Sgt. Gary Podrasky from Johnstown, he is stationed at Fort Hood training troops for deployment. His family said he is safe and is helping with the logistics of the aftermath.Staff Sgt. Mark Morris is another Johnstown soldier who survived the shooting rampage. His mother said he was just two buildings away from the shooting. Also, Barbara Chase spoke with WJAC about her son Lt. Colonial David Chase from Johnstown. She said she got a message from him on her machine saying he is fine and that his wife, a nurse, is helping the wounded. Chase said her heart goes out to the families who weren't as lucky, but she admits it may be a good thing that the shooter wasn't killed."I'm personally glad he is still alive," said Chase. "I am hoping they can find out maybe some reasons why this happened."Flags across the country were flying at half mast for the 13 who lost their lives on the base. Gov. Ed Rendell has ordered all government facilities to lower the flags to half mast as a tribute to the victims.U.S. military forces and Department of Defense employees around the world also had a moment of silence on Friday at 2:34 p.m. which was the exact moment the shootings began.
