Hawks, Magic Battle For Southeast Division Lead

(Sports Network) - An early season battle for Southeast Division supremacy headlines the Thanksgiving Day action in the NBA as the Orlando Magic pay a visit to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks, who lead Orlando by one-half game in the division, are coming off their first loss in two weeks when rookie Darren Collison produced game-highs of 22 points and 11 assists, as New Orleans ended Atlanta's seven-game winning streak with a 96-88 triumph in the Big Easy.

Jamal Crawford had 20 points and Marvin Williams 17 for the Hawks, who entered the game with the NBA's best record and were off to their best start since kicking off the 1997-98 season with 11 straight victories.

Josh Smith chipped in 14 points as did Joe Johnson in the club's first loss since a 20-point setback in Charlotte on November 6.

"We really wanted this win, but they came in with confidence. Marcus Thornton was definitely the story of the game. We really didn't have an answer for him," Hawks head coach Mike Woodson said. "Their guard play really helped them to get over the hump."

Atlanta had to play the final three-and-a-half quarters against New Orleans without veteran point guard Mike Bibby, who left with a sprained left ankle.

"Bibbys our quarterback," Williams told NBA.com. "It's tough when your general goes down like that."

Bibby is listed as questionable for tonight's contest as the Hawks shoot for their eighth straight win at Philips Arena to start the season. A triumph would give the franchise its best home start since beginning 9-0 in the 1993-94 season.

The Magic, meanwhile, are coming off a very tough loss to in-state rival Miami on Wednesday when Michael Beasley's dunk off a short jumper from Dwyane Wade with 1.6 seconds left lifted the Heat to a thrilling 99-98 victory over Orlando, snapping the Magic's five-game winning streak.

Dwight Howard had 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Magic, but he missed two big free throws down the stretch. Jason Williams led the way with 25 points and eight assists, but he was off the mark on a pair of crucial foul shots with 9.5 seconds left, and that opened the door for Miami.

The Heat called timeout with 8.6 seconds left and ran a play for Wade, whose shot from near the foul line was short. Beasley, though, caught the ball out of mid-air and slammed it home. Replays showed the ball was barely short of the basket, although the Magic desperately wanted a goaltending call.

After the game, Orlando's Mickael Pietrus refused to be baited in criticizing the officials, which could have drawn a fine.

"I didn't see the last play, but it is what it is," he said. "I love my money, and I love playing basketball. So I don't want to say anything."

The Magic then tried a long inbounds pass, but it was too far for Vince Carter, who fell into the stands with 0.7 seconds left. Miami inbounded to secure the victory.

After the game, Wade was asked if his last play was a shot or a pass.

"I am going to stop lying," he said. "That was just a great play by Mike. That was a very athletic play and he did exactly what the coaches told him. He said for everybody to crash when I got to the basket and shoot it."

Carter tallied 22 points for the Magic, who lost for just the second time in the last 14 matchups against the Heat.

Orlando was four of is past five games with the Hawks, including three straight in Atlanta.
