Salvation Army Starting To Collect For Holiday Season

Posted: 1:35 pm EDT October 11, 2006Updated: 9:02 am EDT October 12, 2006

It's hard to imagine the holiday season is nearly upon us, but for the Salvation Army, that season is the most important time of the year.

That's why the group is asking for assistance.

According to the Salvation Army, their Thanksgiving event is the start of a busy year for them. At that time, Salvation Army workers prepare and feed the community a nutritious meal on the eve of the holiday.

Last year, officials say they fed 210 people. This year it could be more, so the Salvation Army is trying to get prepared now, and they're giving others the opportunity to help out. The Salvation Army's goal this holiday season is to raise $115,000. In 2005, they raised $114,000 in Johnstown.

But, money is not the only way you can help.

Salvation Army Captain Tim Hinzman said, “We're looking for canned goods. We're looking for bread items, potato items, turkeys, hams, those kinds of things we'll be able to use to help the needy people.”

Officials say you will start seeing kettles and volunteers on or around Nov. 1. Your donations now will also go to helping community members for the upcoming Christmas season.
