JOHNSTOWN -- Jeff Baxter has been a steel worker, making railroad cars, for more than 30 years. Now, his future, and the future of 450 of his peers, is very uncertain.FreightCar America CEO John Carroll has announced imminent layoffs."I wouldn't want to step in his shoes, 'cause I couldn't live with myself," said Baxter. "It's greed. It's pure greed."Carroll said the Johnstown plant is too expensive to run and that he wants to use out-of-state plants instead. He asked workers to give back about $15 an hour in benefits, but has Carroll made any sacrifices?"Go on the Internet and see what Mr. Carroll is getting when he leaves and what he's gotten over the last five years. It's more money than I could ever spend," said Baxter. "Last year, he made $36 million."Carroll told Channel 6 News that he doesn't know how much he made last year. According to documents obtained by Channel 6, his base salary is $550,000. The company also pays for his country club membership and he'll get $1.5 million when he retires in April. When asked about it, Carroll said, "It has nothing to do with what management makes. It has to do with how much production costs."Workers said they will keep building railroad cars for the company, but they hope Carroll's replacement has a different view of things.
