Centre County Community Reacts To Arrests of Local Doctors

A day after the arrests of two local doctors in Philipsburg, people throughout the community are talking about it.

"Because they are professional people and you sort of look up to professional people for your medical needs and this here doesn't go over very well," said Clifford Henry outside a grocery store in Philipsburg.

Jean Butterworth also expressed shock over the arrests.

"I never thought that would happen in Philipsburg because this has been a very quiet community," she said.

Dr. Larry Adams and Dr. Michael Fuentes, both physicians at the Midstate Medical Center, were arrested and charged Tuesday with distributing prescription drugs after an investigation involving a police informant.

Adams has been heading up efforts to reopen the bankrupt Philipsburg Hospital. Now, with his arrest, some of the talk in the community is about the future of the facility.

"I think it is very sad for the community because we were wishing that the would open hospital," said Butterworth. Henry is optimistic it still will. "Well, surely there is someone else who can take up the slack now that these two fellows have been alleged in the -- dealing in the drugs."

While many people in the community are talking, neither Adams nor the attorneys for the hospital are saying anything. They didn't return calls from Channel 6 asking for comment on the future of the hospital.
