6 Best: Johnstown's Incline Plane

Posted: 2:34 pm EDT July 27, 2007Updated: 9:52 am EDT July 30, 2007

The historic Johnstown Incline Plane was built just a few years after the 1889 flood, and the plane is still recognized as the steepest incline in the world.

Before the days of automobiles, the plane was a major source of transportation. During the floods of 1936 and 1977, the plane helped carry residents to drier ground.

Today, the plane is a popular tourist destination. This year alone, more than 100,000 riders have ridden the incline.
