Flight 93 Meeting Held On Design
Saturday, July 28, 2007 – updated: 10:01 pm EDT July 28, 2007
A task force assigned to overseeing the construction of a memorial for the 40 people who perished on Flight 93 again heard complaints today that the design praises the Islamic terrorists who carried out the attacks on September 11th, 2001. The original design has already been changed due to similar complaints that a crescent-shape initially planned as the centerpiece was too similar to the Muslim crescent. At today's meeting, task force members again turned their attention to complaints about the design when Alec Rawls of Palo Alto, California said the proposed memorial faces Mecca, Islam's holiest city. Family members of those who died on the flight and committee members brushed aside the criticism, saying the design celebrates democratic freedom.
