Another Laurel Crest Patient's Death Under Investigation

POSTED: 1:19 pm EDT August 16, 2007
UPDATED: 2:08 pm EDT August 16, 2007

Less than two weeks after Laurel Crest got its operating license back after resolving a number of deficiencies, state inspectors returned to the nursing home for a new investigation.

The county coroner said a 64-year-old woman fell out of a lift on Aug. 9 and struck her head. She was treated and released from a hospital but died three days later.

As of Thursday, authorities did not know if her death was a result of the fall or if she died from natural causes.

The fall happened after Laurel Crest staff underwent extensive training with mechanical lifts, one of the earlier deficiencies the home had been cited for.

"I'm overcome with sadness," said Cambria County commissioner Bill Harris. "It seems the harder we work, things continue to happen. We're not going to quit -- we're so committed to Laurel Crest. I'm so proud of what we've overcome (and) hope to get by this incident and make greater things happen."

The patient's name was not released, but officials said she was terminally ill. The coroner said if her death is ruled accidental then no criminal charges would be filed but Laurel Crest could face sanctions from the state.
