Local Freightcar America Employees File Lawsuit

Posted: 4:08 pm EDT August 16, 2007Updated: 4:37 pm EDT August 16, 2007

After hundreds of workers were laid off, the union members took action against the company.

Workers who spoke to Channel 6 News on Thursday, said the reason behind the lawsuit is simple: the company has violated a retirement security act that is preventing many of the laid-off workers from getting their retirement benefits.

Officials at Freightcar America have laid off many workers at the company's Johnstown plant and moved a lot of their operations to a plant in Virginia over the last several months.

Some of the remaining 30 workers said that many people have been or will be laid off just shy of their 20-year mark, just before they are supposed to be eligible for their pension benefits.

Many believe they are just serving as a "cleaning crew" until the plant closes permanently.

Officials at Freightcar America have not confirmed a complete closure of the Johnstown facility.
