Nursing Home Patient's Death Remains Under Investigation

Monday, August 20, 2007 – updated: 1:38 pm EDT August 20, 2007

A nursing home patient who died days after a fall has been identified as a 64-year-old woman.

Judith Bliger, of Blair County, fell out of a lift at Laurel Crest Nursing Home earlier this month. She was treated and released from the hospital immediately following the incident, then died three days later.

Currently, the Cambria County coroner and the Pennsylvania Department of Health are investigating to determine if the death was a result of the fall or if Bliger died from natural causes.

Laurel Crest has been the center of controversy because, up until last moth, the state health department had the facility under a provisional license because of several deficiencies within the care unit. One of those deficiencies included the care home's lifting procedures.

The Cambria County coroner said the investigation into the cause of death should be complete in about two weeks.

Department of Health officials said they were done viewing the facility on Friday and should have some information in about three weeks.
