Custom Lasik Surgery Corrects Poor Night Vision

POSTED: 8:11 pm EST November 6, 2007
UPDATED: 4:39 pm EST November 7, 2007

Like millions of other people, WJAC-TV reporter Katie Sabatino suffered from poor night vision for years.

"Especially on the highway I notice it the most. It actually throws you off a little bit. You just have to keep looking at the lines to make sure you stay in the lane," Sabatino said.

After wearing corrective lenses since the fourth grade and now in her late 20s, she found her vision was progressively worsening and decided to obtain treatment at Envision Laser Center in Richland Township.

The center conducted a series of tests before determining that Sabatino's eyes were filled with several aberrations, small nicks on the cornea that let extra light in therefore increasing glare and causing poor night vision.

Dr. John Mucciola, optometrist, said Sabatino would be a good candidate for the new custom procedure because a person can have great results with regular Lasik surgery but still be disappointed because they see a glare at night or have trouble driving at night.

The regular Lasik procedure uses a 2 millimeter laser beam to correct vision by removing optic tissue in the process. But with custom Lasik, each unique individual flaw is targeted with a 1 millimeter beam, therefore removing less tissue and giving better results.

"More and more surgeons are using it as king of their standard treatment because we're finding that results are better. We're removing less tissue," said Dr. Ketan Patel, a surgeon.

Sabatino said the results were spectacular. The procedure itself took only about five minutes, then, after a three- to four-hour nap, Sabatino found the results to be spectacular.

Weeks later, she said her vision has improved to better than 20/20 and she no longer has trouble with glare at night.
