Dognapping Trial Continues

Posted: 1:58 pm EST December 13, 2007Updated: 7:26 pm EST December 13, 2007

The trial continued Thursday for an animal rights activist accused of stealing her neighbor's dog.

Tammy Grimes claims the dog was being mistreated. On Thursday, an investigating officer testified there was no evidence of abuse or neglect.

It was quite the scene in the courtroom when a police officer, also an expert in computer crime investigation, presented thong underwear with a picture of Jake the dog printed on them.

The officer bought the underwear from a Web site to which Tammy Grimes submitted her art for re-sale on apparel. The evidence helped the prosecution make the case that Grimes stole the dog as a pawn for profit. Grimes also sold her own artwork with pictures of the dog on her own Web site.

Other witnesses for the prosecution brought evidence to support accusations that Grimes used Jake as a publicity stunt for Dogs Deserve Better, the organization that she founded. The prosecution replayed audio recordings from a local radio station. On the recordings, Grimes admitted that she took Jake. Grimes also made the admission that she wanted publicity.

When the veterinarian who examined the dog upon Grimes' request took the stand as a witness for the defense Thursday, he said his intuition was that somebody hit the dog because "he was lying on his back and couldn't even move. ... He was dehydrated. He was recumbent.... There was no muscle mass."

Once grilled by the prosecution, the veterinarian said he had never seen a German Shepherd that was 19 years old. He suggested that the dog stay so they could do bloodwork, but Grimes took the dog anyway.

Steve and Lori Arnolds' neighbor who reported Jake to Grimes and later helped her load the dog into her van also testified Thursday. She was all tears on the stand as she said she was just thanking God that Jake was finally getting help.

Grimes is expected to take the stand Friday before the jury reaches a verdict. Stay with Channel 6 News and WJACTV.com for continuing coverage.
