Freightcar America Is Closing Johnstown Plant
Posted: 9:03 pm EST December 18,2007
The company says it is critical to take advantage of lower cost manufacturing facilities, and the Johnstown plant is a higher cost facility than other locations. The company also says it did not reach an agreement with the United Steelworkers union that would allow it to operate the Johnstown plant in a cost effective way. One Freightcar America worker told Channel 6 News the Johnstown plant still holds a company record for producing 20 railcars in an 8 hour shift, and that despite claims the plant was not cost effective, in the words of the worker, we made millions of dollars for them.
