Convicted Dognapper Says She Will Not Pay

Posted: 8:18 pm EST February 13, 2008Updated: 9:24 pm EST February 13, 2008

Convicted dognapper, Tammy Grimes is scheduled to be sentenced next week but in an online video Tuesday, she said she's not going to follow the judge's orders and should go to jail instead.

Grimes is battling a judge's order requiring her to pay around $1,700 in court costs for her three-day-long trial in December. The cost included expenses for the jury and the sheriff's department. In the YouTube video, Grimes said she is morally and ethically opposed to footing that bill.

The founder of Dogs Deserve Better faces a fine and community service for stealing Jake the dog from an East Freedom couple more than a year ago. However, in the Internet video, she said she rather go to jail because she's not going to support a system that helps animals, but doesn't punish the people who abuse them.

District Attorney Rich Consiglio said Grimes' statements are flat out wrong.

"The real crime in this case is that she has demonized a couple of hard-working citizens... And has made them look like criminals," said Consiglio.

Consiglio said he thought Jake the dog was finally laid to rest, but it looks like Grimes doesn't want to give up the spotlight.

According to Consiglio, the decision to send Grimes to jail will be up to the judge, but she could be held in contempt of court.
