Sheetz Ad Campaign Under Fire

UPDATED: 10:44 am EST February 29, 2008

An advertisement campaign at a local convenience store chain was supposed to get people's attention, but it seems to be doing more than that.

The new signs at Sheetz stores in the Alleghenies have been promoting the newest item on their menu, fried chicken sandwiches. They say "frickin' chicken sandwich." And now the Sheetz company is under fire for what some people are calling fowl language.

Some Altoona residents said the advertisements are inappropriate and if a child were to pick up on the lingo, it would be even worse if they started repeating it in school.

The sandwiches have been added to the menu at about a third of the Sheetz stores. A Sheetz spokesperson said the signs were never intended for children. The bold ads were aimed at young adults who pick up on the edgy language. According to company officials, they did a test-run and it seemed to go over well, so they rolled out the advertisement campaign.

Sheetz officials said they never meant to offend anyone; they just wanted to sell the sandwiches. However, customers at their store in Hazeltown, Pa., found it exceptionally offensive and they've already taken that billboard down.

The other advertisements will stay intact until the marketing campaign is over next week.

Sheetz officials said the chicken sandwiches are selling well.
