Leap Year Babies Celebrate Unique Birthday

Friday, February 29, 2008 – updated: 3:34 pm EST February 29, 2008

Several new babies born Friday celebrated a unique birthday. Since they were born on Leap Day, they will only celebrate their official birthday once every four years.

Sophia Emmalyn Dietrich was the first baby born at the Mount Nittany Medical Center on Friday.

Sophia was born at 7:53 a.m. and weighted 8 pounds, 8 ounces and was 20.5 inches long.

Her parents, Jeff and Katie, said Sophia wasn't due until March 5 and the unique birthday wasn't planned. Sophia received some special gifts including a warm snowsuit and a pink teddy bear she will no doubt share with her big sister, 3-year-old Hannah.

The girl's parents said that on non-Leap Day years, they will let Sophia choose whether she wants to celebrate on Feb. 28 or March 1.
