BARR TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- An Amish group wants to work out a compromise regarding how they dispose of their waste. The Cambria County Sewage Enforcement Agency has filed charges against a Barr Township Amish community because the group takes the waste from their outhouse and puts it on the land, causing some potential risk for underground wells.Because of their religious beliefs, the Amish families refuse to take on modern sewage practices and they also refuse to pay court fines, so the property owners could face jail time. The community does want to work out a compromise on the matter, they told Channel 6 News they would like to be trained on how to treat the waste, and would like to build their own bathroom facility.Officials from the sewage enforcement agency are still moving forward with charges, despite the suggestions of the community. The property owners are expected in court on April 24.
