CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. -- It was a big win for steelworkers Tuesday as a ruling came down, forcing Freightcar America to pay up. According to officials with the United Steelworkers Union, 200 or more men laid off by the company, will receive a year's worth of back wages and benefits.Representatives with the steelworkers union said it's because their contract states that anyone with 20 or more years of service is supposed to be guaranteed 40 hours a week of work."That's the way the contract read, and that's the way they should have done it," said former employee Jeff Baxter. "I think we showed that doesn't work with us."Freightcar officials may soon have to be writing a lot of zero's on check, not only for the back-pay, but also for every single visit to the doctor over the past year for the employees."Anything they had to shell out of their pocket, they are going to get back," said Baxter.Baxter has been the spokesperson for the employees of Freightcar since the layoffs began. He and several other men were able to get their pensions by taking the company to court, and with Tuesday's ruling he admits, he's feeling validated."I think they (Freightcar America) deserve it."
