High Gas Prices Make Rough Road For Rock Run

Posted: 7:50 pm EDT May 8, 2008Updated: 8:41 pm EDT May 8, 2008

Rock Run hit the ground running last year when it opened. More than 6,000 ATV and dirt bike riders showed up to try out the trails. However, this year things could be different due to the high cost of gas.

"We're concerned because the majority of our riders are from out of state like California, Maine and Alaska," said Rock Run manager Andy Gonsman.

Rock Run is in the northern part of Cambria County and is quickly becoming known as a hot spot for riders from all over the country. However, not everyone is willing to foot big bucks to get there. The park is trying to compensate by reaching out to local riders. In April, it hosted a dollar day, just for folks around the Alleghenies.

The gas concerns are not just limited to Rock Run. It may trickle down to surrounding communities like Patton, that were hoping to capitalize on incoming tourists.

"That's (the high gas prices) going to hurt everybody," said Patton business owner Charles Davis. "As prices go up, people have to pick and chose what they spend their money on."

However Davis and others at Park Avenue Pub are staying positive.

"The people who can afford to travel and buy four-wheelers are still going to come. They love it," said Davis.
