Clearfield County College Student Warns Residents About Unsecured Wireless Networks

UPDATED: 7:03 pm EDT May 9, 2008

A Clearfield County college student is warning residents of the dangers of unsecured wireless networks.

It started as a class project for Penn State DuBois freshman Walt Timblin Jr.

He travelled around the gated community of Treasure Lake with a laptop and a special computer program.

Timblin found that around 40 percent of homes in the community had unsecured wireless networks.

He said that leaves computers open for hackers and added that securing your network is easy.

"There are instructions right in the router user manual," he said. "It guides the user through the process."

According to Timblin, one of the easiest ways to secure your network is to change the network name.

You can find ways to secure your network on Timblin's Web site.
