Police Caution About Police Dog Policies

After a deadly shooting in Pittsburgh last week, local police want residents aware of how they should respond if a K-9 officer and a police dog are working nearby.

The Pittsburgh incident left a police dog and a 19-year-old dead from gunshot wounds.

Because of grants from the federal government, police dogs are becoming more common at small, local departments.

Detectives at the Richland Police Department are reminding their residents if they are a witness or involved in a situation with police dogs, they should stand back to give the dogs room to work.

They also remind everyone not to approach a handling officer unless instructed to do so and taunting or trying to play with the dog while they are working is against the law.
