Propane Customers React To Non-Usage Charges

Thursday, May 15, 2008 – updated: 7:53 pm EDT May 16, 2008

An elderly couple in Cambria County said they are being forced to pay a non-usage fee for not using their propane gas.

The couple gets their gas from Ferrellgas, but hasn't used enough gas to have their tank refilled over the last year.

On their May bill, the couple had a $100 charge for not using the service.

Their daughter, Debbie Boring, said they pay less than $100 to have the tank filled up.

Boring said they tried are not going to pay the charge, but they do want to warn other customers who may be conserving their gas use.

Other unsatisfied customers contacted Channel 6 News saying they were also seeing non-usage fees on their bills as well.

Ferrellgas representatives told Channel 6 News the charge is clearly outlined in their master agreement sent to their customers.

They said the charge is because of the expensive propane tanks they allow customers to borrow and use at their homes.

Some customers are taking their concerns to the Better Business Bureau and one upset customer said she has turned her complaint over to the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Representatives from the Attorney Generals office said they have not received an alarming amount of complaints from Ferrellgas customers, but they do encourage any dissatisfied customers to contact them.
