POSTED: 6:52 pm EDT May 20, 2008
UPDATED: 7:59 pm EDT May 20, 2008

A coal truck accident in Westmoreland County left one man dead.

It happened in Fairfield Township on Route 711, just south of New Florence around 1:30 PM on Tuesday.

According to state police, 83-year-old Earl West of Bolivar, Pa was not wearing a seatbelt when he pulled out of his driveway in front of the coal truck. The truck hit the driver's side, causing the car to flip on it's side. It collided with a utility pole and a pine tree. West was pronounced dead at the scene.

The roadway was shut down for most of the afternoon as accident reconstruction teams attempted to piece together the accident. Drivers were taken on a short detour to allow crews to work.

Route 711 has since reopened.
