NEWRY, Pa. -- With the price of diesel fuel creeping closer to $5 a gallon, local shoppers are watching stores continually jack up their prices for fruits and vegetables. And those price hikes are giving them all the more reason to buy local. With Pennsylvania's prime season for fruit and vegetables right around the corner, some customers will finally be getting a little relief.Brian Meiser and his wife own Leighty's Farm Market in Newry. Meiser said they grow a lot of their own vegetables or buy produce from local farms and orchards within 100 miles from their store.Meiser said the cost of the produce is as much as the freight to deliver it, so they're gearing up to sell tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers at prices the bigger supermarkets just can't beat.Meiser said vegetable plants are also out-selling flowers because a lot of people are planning to grow their own vegetables this year to save money.
