ALTOONA, Pa. -- Uncertainty about their funding and high gas prices have local bus authorities proceeding with caution. That means they are not making any long-term commitments to their employees. On Wednesday, Amtran voted to extend their contract for unionized workers for just one year, when usually it's a three-year extension. Officials said they're not sure where their finances will be one year from now.Leasing the turnpike and tolling Interstate 80 both play into their public funding. They don't know how either of those are going to unfold. Officials said the ever-increasing pain at the pump isn't helping either.Amtran isn't alone. Last year, Camtran made the same move. They also negotiated a one-year contract for their unionized drivers and mechanics. Camtran officials said although they've had an increase in riders, which helps their case for more funding, they're dishing out boat-loads of money for diesel. With all of the factors in mind, the Amtran officials said they just can't lock themselves in for three to five years because they don't know if they will be able to keep everybody on board.Amtran plans to re-evaluate next year to see if they can go back to a three-year contract for their unionized employees. And Camtran said they'll start looking at their figures and funding next month to decide whether a shorter contract is still their best option.
