Employees Claim They Were Underpaid

Three women who were employed at a new restaurant in Bedford said they put in hundreds of hours of work and were just ripped off.

Megan Kesner, Summer Eckard and Ashley Claycomb worked at Peppino's Restaurant in Bedford for about a month. When they received their first pay checks, it wasn't pretty.

Peppino's Restaurant moved from Altoona to Bedford. Kesner said she worked there since it opened, which was well over 170 hours.

Kesner said she kept asking the owners when she was going to get paid and they kept putting it off. When her pay check finally came, it wasn't what she had bargained for.

"I got the paycheck. It was for nothing," said Kesner.

Eckard said she was paid $11 for 134 hours. And Claycomb said she received $33 for more than 120 hours of work.

They said after pleading with the owners for more money, they were told to turn in their hours the next day. They said they did receive checks for more money, but they did not reflect all of the hours they worked. And they were also fired.

"He asked me to hand in my apron. I asked him why I was fired, and he didn't really have an answer," said Claycomb.

The owner told Channel Six News the checks were accurate. He also said the women were fired because they left his restaurant dirty. And according to the owner, they were on a 90-day trial period and when he tried to train them, they showed "teenage defiance."

Kesner said now, they're not just short on cash they're out of jobs. But they said will be contacting labor relations to see what they can do and they're warning their friends not to apply for jobs at Peppino's.
