Second Johnstown Building Collapses

After months of warnings, a Johnstown building with numerous code violations collapsed on Saturday.

The building was the second one in four days to collapse in the city.

The walls of the Planning Mill building buckled and fell onto Horner Street, and as of Monday morning, crews were still working to clean up the debris.

City Councilman Jack Williams said he warned other city leaders about the building's violations, but said nothing was done to ensure the property's safety by bringing it back up to code.

City Manager Curt Davis said the property was in the process of being sold, which is why officials did not file charges against the owner.

Davis said he is willing to take a more aggressive approach against owners of blighted properties.

On Wednesday evening, another Johnstown building collapsed on Steel Street in the Old Conemaugh section.

Officials said the owner of that building is working to hire a contractor to demolish what's left. Crews from the city knocked down part of the building to make sure none of it fell into the street.
