Police: Indiana County Trucker Drove On Siphoned Fuel, Stolen Turnpike Pass

Tuesday, July 8, 2008 – updated: 2:51 pm EDT July 8, 2008

An Indiana County truck driver is accused of having an elaborate pumping system that allowed him to steal diesel fuel from other trucks.

Thomas Wambold, 35, of Blairsville, is also accused of using a stolen E-ZPass transponder to avoid $575,000 in turnpike tolls.

State police said they initially stopped Wambold for an equipment problem. Investigators said they determined he had used a transponder stolen from a Georgia company more than 1,200 times over 2 1/2 years.

Police also said Wambold's truck exceeded the turnpike's weight limit by 17 tons.
