Football Standout Dies In Tragic Crash

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. -- Two young lives were lost over the weekend in Westmoreland County. One of the victims was an outstanding football player in the Alleghenies.Officials at Ligonier Valley High School said the deaths of 18-year-old Brandon Boyd and 19-year-old Ross Gibson are devastating for the school and the rest of the community.Boyd and Gibson were killed when their car crossed the center line along Route 271 in Fairfield Township early Sunday morning. They hit a guardrail and went airborne.Boyd had just graduated from Ligonier Valley this year, where he was an outstanding athlete and the co-captain of the Mounties football team. He holds the school record and Heritage Conference record for interceptions in a season. He was also a 2008 Ken Lantzy Finest 40 All-Star.Gibson graduated two years ago. The principal of Ligonier Valley said both young men were well known to the students and staff at the school and they were currently working in the community.School officials said they're offering counseling at the school for students.
