Fireman's Wife Saves Man, Child From Somerset County Apartment Fire

Posted: 1:40 pm EDT July 25, 2008Updated: 5:59 pm EDT July 25, 2008

An assistant fire chief's wife saved a man and his young daughter from an apartment fire in Somerset County early Friday.

The fire broke out at the former Grand Central Hotel in Hooversville around 4:30 a.m. Friday and quickly spread to a neighboring apartment building.

Jennifer Stevanus was woken up when her husband, who is part of the Hooversville Fire Department, received word of the fire. Instead of going back to sleep, she quickly decided to help and went to the scene.

While fire crews tackled the blaze, Stevanus ran into the apartment building to wake up Jason Oldham and his 4-year-old daughter.

"I knew Jason and Titi were up there, so I figured I need to get up there and do something. The fire wasn't in the building yet, but I knew it was going to spread fast. I was just worried about them," said Stevanus.

Oldham said, "If it wasn't for her knocking on the door, I would have never found my way out because it was so cloud and smoky."

A state police fire marshal said it was very likely the fire was intentionally set. A ruling is expected sometime next week.
