Bedford County D.A. Resigns As Vice Chairman For GOP

In a closed-door meeting Tuesday night in Bedford, District Attorney Bill Higgins resigned as the vice chairman of the county's Republican Party.

Channel 6 News was told that Higgins called the executive meeting at one of the member's homes to apologize for his actions. Higgins admitted to having sex with a woman in his office of the courthouse on July 10.

Channel 6 cameras were rolling as the major Republican players in the county gathered. However, many of them refused to answer our questions.

After about an hour and a half, the committee came out together to make a statement.

"The leadership of the Republican Party does not condone what he did," said Chairman Gilbert Verdiglione. "However, we do commend him for taken fully responsibility for his actions."

Higgins also reiterated the pain the situations has caused and responded to allegations that he tried to bribe a commissioner to keep the incident quiet. The commissioners are looking into the matter because the sexual activity happened on county property.

"It's absurd," said Higgins. "The only thing I said to Commissioner Herline was to remind him that families are involved and are hurting right now."

Higgins hopes to spend the extra time with his family as he works to repair his relationship with his wife.
