Bedford District Attorney Admits To Sexual Affair In Courthouse

A Bedford County district attorney resigned from one of his posts after he admitted to having sex with a woman in the courthouse.

In a closed-door executive meeting, William Higgins resigned Tuesday as vice-chair of the county's Republican party. About a dozen major Republican players gathered at one of the member's homes in Bedford, including Higgins, who apologized for the incident.

Higgins, who is married, admitted to having sex with a woman in his office in the courthouse on July 10 after a Republican committee meeting.

"It's a very difficult time in my life, and my wife and I are working through something right now," Higgins said. "I've been very candid and open about it, but quite frankly, I'm done answering questions about all this."

Commissioners are also investigating the matter because the incident occurred on county property.

Bert Verdiglione, Republican party chairman, said, "The leadership of the Republican party in this county does not condone nor excuse the actions of Mr. Higgins, but respects the fact that he has taken full responsibility of his actions."
