Unpaid Taxes Cause Problems In Jefferson County Community

POSTED: 10:39 pm EDT August 7, 2008
UPDATED: 11:03 pm EDT August 7, 2008

It costs only a few dollars per person, but one little tax could cost one Jefferson County community thousands of dollars in court costs.

Falls Creek borough officials said more than 30 residents still haven't paid their per capita tax.

"It happens year after year," said Borough Council President Dennis Peck.

The unpaid taxes will cost the borough about $250.

But Peck said court costs could top $3,000.

"It's the principle of the whole issue," he said. "People should be paying their taxes."

Peck added that other communities in the area have adopted a strict stance on unpaid taxes.

He said Falls Creek may need to look in that direction.
