Thieves Hit Nearly Dozen Businesses

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 – updated: 9:20 am EDT August 20, 2008

It looked like thieves went door-to-door in Huntingdon Borough over the weekend. Borough police said they broke into four businesses overnight Saturday and at least six more on Sunday.

Police said the thieves broke into car garages, a florist, a doctor's and an attorney's office -- even a local restaurant -- through the windows and doors. According to police, they made off with petty cash from some of the places, but the damage was more costly.

On Tuesday, some of the business owners said the worst part was the loss of business. They had to close Monday morning so police could investigate and they stayed closed to clean up the mess. They said they were still playing catch-up on Tuesday.

The owners said they think the thieves just had their eyes on some fast cash.

"I really think it's something to do with drug money. There were valuable tools and all kinds of things they could have taken, but they just went for the money," said Dave Kauruter, who owns Dave's Truck and Auto Repair on Moore Street.

Police said they do have persons of interest, but have not yet made any arrests. Anyone with information should contact the Huntingdon Borough Police Department.
