Elk County Community Benefits From Landfill

Wednesday, August 20, 2008 – updated: 7:53 pm EDT August 20, 2008

Landfills are the subject of protest all across the Alleghenies.

But for one Elk County community, a landfill continues to bring in big benefits.

The Greentree landfill is located in a rural area of Fox Township about five miles away from the community of Kersey.

Officials said the township receives about one dollar from every ton of trash brought into the landfill.

The township uses that money for new development, such as a new park, senior center and ambulance station.

It also gives township officials the ability to keep taxes low.

Residents also have the opportunity to bring their trash to the township building for no charge.

Township officials said the landfill also gives a $5,000 scholarship to a Fox Township student every school year.
